Climb Speech and Debate Camp
Congress and Speaking Program

Our camp provides outstanding instruction in Congress and speaking.

High School and Middle School

CONGRESS and SPEAKING PROGRAM

You will focus on the key aspects of Congressional debate including bill preparation, speech preparation and presentation, asking questions, answering questions, parliamentary procedure, and being student leader. We will emphasize strong, clear speaking. You will work with people who have a strong knowledge of good public debating skills.

You will also learn key skills in speaking and experience multiple practices with extensive feedback to improve. You will learn how to structure your presentation and to deliver in ways that make you an effective communicator.

STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTION

The philosophy of the Congress Speaking schedule and instruction is hands-on as much as possible.  The first day is a straightforward lecture/lab series with a demonstration of what the event should look like.  The second day involves skills training that will include a number of fun exercises designed to work "outside the box" and make the technique memorable.  The third day shifts to formality and decorum - the students will play the role of congress people the entire day, and decorum will be strictly enforced. From there, you develop speaking skills, learning the key parts of an effective speech. You'll present multiple times with supportive feedback as you continue to engage in congress and also in speaking.

ENCOURAGING ATMOSPHERE

At Climb the Mountain Speech and Debate Camp, we support you. We know it takes courage to speak and we know the effort you'll put into making your arguments. We understand students who are nervous about speaking; students who have strong opinions that they want to express; and students who want to learn how to organize their thoughts and express them effectively. At Climb the Mountain, we will work one-on-one with you to realize your goals in a supportive environment.

SMALL LABS

For most of your day, you work in a small lab interacting one-on-one with our staff members. You will NOT get lost in huge labs and lecture halls. Our staff are people who care about working with you to make you the best that you can be.

PRACTICE WITH FEEDBACK

You will practice each key part of congressional debating and in speaking one-on-one with a supportive staff member. You'll also engage in multiple practice sessions where you will get the help you need to be effective and the feedback to improve. You will practice preparing bills, engaging in refutation, crystallization, and a full congressional debate session with feedback and redos so you improve.
