Schoolers

Join us for an immersive experience in communicating better about issues important to you. Learn to express yourself; learn to organize your thoughts; meet other students interested in what you are interested in, learn about important subjects.

Led by Jim Hanson, one of the most successful speech and debate coaches in the nation. He has extensive and award winning experience teaching speech and debate (see below). 

 

Improve your critical thinking skills, your knowledge about the world, all while you have fun engaging in effective communication.

Our After School Speech and Debate Programs are held at

Designed for Middle School Students--beginners with no experience to intermediate debaters to polished, highly accomplished champions.

We meet once a week from 5 to 7pm.

Debate Program includes dinner

You like sharing your ideas. You want to prepare for your future. You care about our community and want to advocate for it. You desire to defend your ideas effectively. You want to learn about the world. You want to win! Jim and the Climb staff will give you the skills and practice to debate effectively. This program culminates in debates at Seattle University with middle school students from all over the Puget Sound area.

* dates with an * use an online video program which we will show students how to use instead of regular classrooms because rooms may not be available on those days. Dinner is not provided on these days.

We strongly encourage but do not require students to participate in the Seattle U Middle School Debate Tournaments.  Attending a Seattle U debate tournament costs $50 and includes food and all registration fees.

Climb debate teams placed second and third as a squad, had two of our teams in finals, and a top speaker at the Seattle U 2018-19 tournaments!

SPEAKING AND DISCUSSING:   

We meet from 5 to 7pm on Wednesdays in the Winter.

Session 1-Speaking-Wednesdays: Jan 15, 22, 29, Feb 5,12, $158.

Session 2-Speaking Wednesdays: Feb 26, Mar 4,11, 18, $128.

Speaking & Discussing Program includes dinner

You need to communicate in groups and in presentations and that is exactly what you will do in this program. You want to express your ideas effectively. You want to be a good communicator-as a speaker and in your interactions with other people. This program will give students the skills and practice to present effectively while also engaging students in the skills and practice of effective discussion. This program culminates in presentations and group discussion.

Head Instructor

Jim Hanson is a 6 time award winner as a speech and debate coach. In 2018, he coached nine teams to the elimination rounds at the Stanford national tournament and several first place college team awards. In 2019, Jim coached a national first year U.S. Universities championship round team and multiple middle school debaters to win speaker and team awards. Overall, he has coached 7 national championships squads, hundreds of teams and speakers into elimination rounds at tournaments, is the Executive Director of Climb the Mountain Speech and Debate Foundation, President of West Coast Publishing that provides speech and debate materials to many schools throughout the United States, and he is the Director of Speech and Debate at Seattle University.

Jim has worked with middle school students (as well as high school and college students) at multiple schools, programs, and camps.

Jim will be assisted by outstanding Climb the Mountain staff who are highly skilled and accomplished instructors ready to support you and give you great feedback to improve.
